Even Closer to Fully Remote

It’s embarrassing to share your dreams. Stating the future you envision and what you hope to accomplish makes you vulnerable because it invites criticism. The first responses to a statement of goals are often pointing out barriers preventing those goals from being accomplished.

I want to be able to stream from any golf course, fully producing the stream at the same time as playing a round of golf.

Over the late summer I made a major change to the structure of the stream. Instead of broadcasting from a local instance of OBS (laptop on the golf course), I began transmitting audio and video from the course out to a remote PC where overlays are applied and the final output is sent to the broader internet. I’ve had to learn a bunch about computing networks resulting in the pervasive thought, “Wow, is it ever difficult to get computers to talk to each other”. I’ve reached a point where I thought the output sufficiently matched what I had envisioned so that I could begin to stream in earnest. And was it ever fun to stream those half dozen rounds in September and October. The season has now ended and I already wish for the next to start. Always more to do though and I want to make the stream more robust, smaller, and easier to setup for the coming year.

Recently, I’ve had a massive breakthrough. For the shot tracer I use a program called SCRCPY to transmit the phone screen to the streaming PC. For the past few years, I’ve had to physically plug the phone into the streaming PC to gain appropriate access before being able to remotely share screens. This connection resets when either the phone or PC restarts. I’ve just figured out a way to gain access remotely. About 7 hours worth of work was condensed into a single sentence there. The ability to gain access to my shot tracer from the golf course was one of the final steps to make the stream fully remote, able to be transported anywhere and fully remote control the streaming PC. I can now turn on, restart, connect to, and control the streaming PC all from a variety of phones and single board computers that litter my golf bag.
